Safety On Your Playground

Everyone wants to insure that their playgrounds are safe! But how do you know for sure? There are two primary documents that address playground safety:

The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) created the first playground safety guidelines in 1981, and since then these have been regularly updated. The Handbook for Public Playground Safety is a user-friendly document and includes good safety information for the average consumer.

By comparison, the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) has developed stringent safety standards which are more detailed and manufacturer-oriented. These standards exist for both playground equipment and safety surfacing materials, and the benefit of these is that they are third-party verifiable via the International Playground Equipment Manufacturers Association (IPEMA).

Please note that a manufacturer’s membership in IPEMA does not insure that their products have been certified as compliant; only individual components or products can be certified. Safety experts recommend that you request a copy of written IPEMA certification before making any purchase; you can obtain this from the manufacturer or you can print it yourself off of the IPEMA website. All GameTime playground equipment is IPEMA-certified before it goes into the catalog, assuring you of total compliance.
